Growing succulents from Seeds

Growing cacti from seeds can be a rewarding and interesting process. Here's a basic guide to help you get started:
- Gather Your Supplies:
- Cactus seeds of your choice
- Well-draining potting mix suitable for cacti/succulents
- Small pots or trays with drainage holes
- Clear plastic wrap or a small greenhouse
- Watering can with a fine nozzle
- Spray bottle for misting
- Grow light or a sunny windowsill
- Prepare the Potting Mix: Ensure the potting mix is well-draining to prevent waterlogging, as cacti are susceptible to root rot. You can mix sand, pumice, perlite, and regular potting soil to create a suitable mix. Soil sterilisation is recommended. Steaming or or few minutes in microwave kills insects and fungal spores in the soil mix. Don't overheat is though.
- Sow the Seeds: Fill your pots or trays with the prepared potting mix. Sprinkle the cactus seeds evenly over the surface of the soil. Do not bury the seeds deeply; they only need a light covering of soil.
- Watering: Use a fine nozzle watering can or misting spray to moisten the soil thoroughly. Ensure that the soil is moist but not soggy. You can also place the pots in a tray of water and allow the soil to soak up moisture from the bottom.
- Cover and Create Humidity: Cover the pots or trays with clear plastic wrap or place them in a small greenhouse to create a humid environment. This helps to retain moisture and create a microclimate conducive to seed germination.
- Temperature: For most of cactus species, the best temperature for seeds germination is from +18-20°C at night to +25-28°C during a day. Depends on your situation, your might need a heating pad that usually help raise the temperature to extra 8-10 degrees.
- Provide Light: Place the pots in a location where they can receive bright, indirect light or under a grow light. Cacti seeds generally require light for germination, so avoid placing them in complete darkness. Be careful leaving your pots on a sunny windowsill because it can heat and kill the seedling in a matter of couple of hours!
- Maintain Moisture and Ventilation: Check the pots regularly to ensure that the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. If condensation forms inside the plastic wrap, gently ventilate the pots to prevent mold growth. Adding hydrogen peroxide into the water would help to prevent young seedlings from mold and algae.
- Be Patient: Cactus seeds can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to germinate, depending on the species and growing conditions. Be patient and continue to provide proper care.
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed several true areole and are large enough to handle, you can transplant them into individual pots with well-draining soil or one bigger pot spacing it 1-2 diameter between seedlings.
- Care for Seedlings: Continue to provide adequate light, water sparingly, and gradually introduce them to more sunlight as they grow. Cacti are resilient plants but be cautious not to overwater them, as this can cause root rot.
Remember, growing cacti from seeds requires patience and attention to detail, but with the right care, you can enjoy watching your tiny seeds grow into beautiful cacti!
